SYMPHONIC CHAOS - Sterilising the unworthy 15 tracks 41 minutes

Coming to me all the way from Australia, and with the most strikingly colourful and gorgeous artwork on back and front, obviously this one immediately made me sit up to take note. A very strange recording in parts. Fitting into the sombre and dark melodic death metal category I believe, but only just, as lots of progressive death and thrash collide with many instrumental and orchestral sounding parts and scapes. After the initial madness, "Lotus Storm" comes in with much weirdness abound, very in the vein of Ebony Lake but not quite as chaotic and disturbing. There is also an edge of Akercocke in there as well, in the more deathly vocals and chuggy guitars, but layered over the top of such things are very out-there solos and lead patterns, played to such a very high standard, and taking over your mind as they climb and soar further into a mad armageddon of riffs and blasting drums. For most of this record, we have a very Atheist, Cynic, old At the Gates feel to proceedings, along with a touch of early Amorphis and the maturity of playing seen in bands like Children of Bodom (not quite to THAT level though), and of Opeth, and then drop in the occasional reference to Nile, classical music, and Accidental IL EST INTERDIT DE PARLER DE SUICIDE SUR CE FORUM, but play them all pretty much at once, and we have what can literally only be described as Symphonic Chaos. Highlights include the incredible start to "XXII Raped Virgins", a most bizarre drum pattern and a crazy almost Meshuggah/ Allan Holdsworth style lead guitar section, and then the vicious death growls and broken, insane patterns take over once more. An immaculate and intense journey through musical madness from S.C, who possess something that a lot of other bands wish they could, and thats true creativity, plus the ability to actually pull off what they wanted to achieve. Mad.

Review from Eternal Frost Webzine -

I was contacted by Symphonic Chaos thru my [mp3.com] death metal station (Darkness Enshrouded--check it out sometime!) for inclusion of something of theirs on my station. I obliged them and asked about getting a promo of their full-length release being reviewed here. A couple weeks later, after some miscommunication from band members, and it arrived at my doorstep! They play death metal but with some differences. You hear sound bytes, classical-styled guitar solos, pummeling drums, solid bass lines, grinding rhythm guitar, etc., which makes it a bit chaotic but a refreshing listen when compared to a lot of the death metal being played out there today. Some string/synth music accompanies some of the tunes and adds an eerie atmosphere to them as well. This disc has 15 tracks of reasonable length (anywhere from just over a minute (intro/interlude?) to just over five minutes in length. It is not your usual death metal fare for sure. The elements are all there: pummeling drums, death metal vocals, etc. But the twist is the synth/strings, sound bytes and classical pieces that make this an interesting listen. Not what I was expecting. They are surely doing something a tad different from the normal fare, and I appreciate those willing to do something a tad different than the usual mould/fare. I guess comparisons could be to Misanthrope for their odd signatures and time changes in some songs ("Sinister Visions" is a prime example of this and I like this track!). Definitely Misanthrope tendencies here, which is quite cool as I do enjoy that band as well. Chaotic, brutal, unique is what I can say about this bands music. --Metal Mike Soucy
